Certain apps are a must when traveling abroad. Especially when you are going to be in multiple countries using various currencies. You could be at a kiosk looking to exchange dollars for euros and want to double check how good the rate is. Or you could be out shopping and want to now the price of something in your home currency before you charge it to your credit card and avoid the sticker shock when you get your bill.
XE Currency App is available for Android, iPhone as well as Windows phones. For my review, I downloaded it from the App Store for my iPhone 4S free of charge. The layout is what first caught my eye. The ability to see your home currency and multiple others on the screen at the same time was a big plus for me. The ease of erasing currencies and adding new ones as you travel was amazingly simple. Unless you are traveling to a remote tribal region where the local currency is goat, it will be hard not to find what you need in XE’s broad selection of currencies.
The rates are current as they are updated at time intervals that you enter into your settings. Or simply pull down the screen to refresh. Swapping currencies on your screen is as easy as a short press of one currencies to make it the local. Or you can enable location and have the local currency automatically be home. The small calculator icon on the screen simplifies changing the amounts and is ready at your fingertips. If you are in a spot where you have lost phone service and/or wifi you still can see your home screen with the rates from the last refresh. Unless there was a catastrophic market adjustment, it will be plenty close enough.
There is even access to currency history charts if you’re curious. There is a small ad banner across the bottom of the screen which I found to be unobtrusive.
Overall I found the XE Currency App worked flawlessly. If you are like me and feel the need to know how much you are spending along the way I suggest XE to give you that financial peace of mind.
