If you are heading to Medellin chances are pretty good that you will make use of a taxi at some point. Although ride sharing company Uber is not technically legal in Colombia, it’s still a safe bet.
After doing a little research online I knew that Uber was operating in a grey legal area in Colombia. Still, my lack of Spanish skills told me it would be easier to use an Uber as opposed to a local taxi. After exiting from Jose Maria Cordova (International Airport) I opened up the Uber app and requested a ride. Within a few seconds I was alerted that my driver, Maria was a few minutes away. She contacted me via text and asked if I could meet her a short distance from the arrivals door. The drivers here are avoiding other taxis and airport security due to the “grey area”. It was only across the street and down a flight of stairs to where she was awaiting me.
Here is where you need to know to sit in the front seat. The driver wants to appear like they are just giving a ride to a friend. Just stow you bag in the backseat and hop in the front. Although this could be a bit strange if you are traveling as a couple but typically you don’t spend much time in a ride share anyway. Maria politely explained to me that Uber was not legal in Colombia and if anyone were to ask me, “we are friends”. No problem! Our quick 30 minute ride to my hotel was smooth and pleasant.
My return trip to the airport was very similar. Jose informed me that “we are friends” if anyone asks. No one ever questioned me on either of my rides but I can’t really say the situation ever seemed to call for it either. When Jose and I got to the departure terminal I explained that he could drop me off at any entrance. He understood I knew he was trying to avoid the look of being a driver. With that, when we pulled up to the entrance, Jose got out of the car and shook my hand and sent me on my way. I stated out loud “good to see you again Jose”!
In summary. Sit in the front and remember “we are friends”.
