This past winter got off to a slow start in New England but when mother nature finally decided to show her fury it came hard. Record snowfalls and cold temperatures were set in many areas and once the calender said Spring most have had it with the snow. For those who ski, huddled up together, around the infrared heater in a mountain lodge somewhere, all those harsh snowfalls have left a deep snow base to enjoy as warmer days arrive!
A few friends and I decided to play hooky from work and take a road trip up to Waterville Valley in New Hampshire, located in the heart of the pristine White Mountains . they were running a special on Tuesday’s in March and pricing lift tickets based on the day’s temperature, forecast of 31 F equated to a bargain price of just $31! After a fueled coffee trek up to the mountain we arrived to a not so spring temp of 14 F, Brrr. But it was a bluebird day with nothing but sunshine and not a puff of wind. By the time we geared up and hit the slopes it already felt like it had warmed up. As any skier knows, the value of shredding mid-week can be priceless. Lift line waiting time? Zero. We rode up the lift with a local who stated, “getting a bit busy today, must be the warm weather”. Busy? Wow, I’d hate to see what he’d say if he saw Killington on a weekend.
The morning started off with some perfectly groomed corduroy with just a touch of hard-pack and a few small ice patches. As the sun worked its way around the snow quickly softened up, our day just kept getting better. We hit the steeps, played in the bumps and even hit up a small ski-cross trail. Wateville boasts itself has the “birthplace of freestyle skiing” so it as a gnarly terrain park too. Waterville Valley seems to have all the modern amenities of a big east coast mountain yet hasn’t lost any of the charm typical of smaller mountains. The staff from the lift attendants to bartenders were all as friendly as good be. If you have some time to ski this Spring they still have a ton of snow and if you can’t make it this spring maybe we’ll meet up next winter.
