How To Get From Kuala Lumpur Airport To City Center

By

Arriving in Kuala Lumpur

There are always a lot of options on how to arrive at your destination from the airport in most major cities.  Here I will explain a relatively  simple and cost effective way on how to get to Kuala Lumpur from the airport.

kl train

First there are two major airports, Kuala Lumpur International Airport 1 & 2.  Commonly referred to as KLIA 1 and KLIA 2. Both are international airports, while KLIA 1 tends mostly to long haul routes and KLIA 2 shorter haul.  Once you have cleared customs head for the signs reading “KLIA Ekspres“.  This is an express train that is the quickest way to get to the heart of KL.  Head for a ticket counter and purchase a one way ticket to ‘KL Sentral”.   At a cost of around $9.50 U.S. this 30 minute trip spares you the good odds of hitting heavy traffic from the airport.  Both KLIA1 & KLIA2  are serviced by the express train and are only one stop apart at a distance of about 5-7 minutes.   Trains depart about every 15 minutes and boast free wifi.

After a you arrive at KL Sentral head upstairs and look for the taxi signs.  Before you head outside there is a taxi counter just inside the doors in the station.  Here you will tell the counter help where you would like to go and pre-pay for your ride.  The agent will give you a slip indicating a receipt and where you are going.   Simply go outside and queue up and hand the driver the slip.  That is your payment less any amount you’d like to tip.  Though locals will say you can get a better price on the street, my pre-pay cost was $3.50 for the 10-15 minute drive to my hotel from KL Sentral.  So for about $14 you have a very easy and cheap way to get from KLIA to the city center.   Please note:  Take a look on a map to locate your hotel beforehand.  If you are not staying in or near the city center a taxi or hotel transfer may be the way to go.
