A Travelers Review of the Canon PowerShot SX510 HS

By

I am no photographer. If I am able to capture an awesome image it is because the landscape is beautiful and the camera did all the work for me.  In comes the Canon PowerShot .

I prefer the point and shoots just for my limited photography skills. We can’t all be Ken Kaminesky, though it’s fun to try to be. I need a camera that can fool myself (and others). Point and shoots have come a long way but there is a huge difference in models depending on what you are seeking. I recently went  a 30 day RTW trip and was in need of a new camera. The following features were on my list.

1- Compact enough to fit in a coat pocket.
2- Rechargeable battery with good life.
3- Zoom ability of at least 20x optical without swapping lenses.
4- Wifi capabilities so I can simply swap pics to a tablet without a USB.
5- Last but not least, make my pics look good and don’t break my bank.

After some research. I found the Canon PowerShot SX510 HS to fit the bill. Small enough to fit into a medium size coat side pocket. It was easy to carry with me all day without noticing it. I spent a day in a very cold Budapest taking about 200 photos over a 12 hour span. Since it was still new to me, I was still playing with features and practicing. I still returned to my hotel that night with 50% of the charge left on the battery. The 30x optical was my main reason for purchasing this camera. For me it offers amazing zoom capabilities. At first I found it a bit difficult to capture a clear image with the lens fully extended but after a couple of days I was able to get a feel for it and gain crystal clear images with a steady hand.

It took great night shots too.

It took great night shots too.

I like to travel light and leave the laptop behind and just carry my iPhone and a 7″ tablet, leaving me with no USB. With the Canon wifi abilities you are able to transfer images to your phone, tablet or cloud accounts wirelessly over wifi. It took a while to set up but worthwhile. It retails for $249.00 but can be found on sale for about $200.
For all its features I found it a bargain and have been very happy with the image quality. I love a camera that helps me take better than I actually can!

Canon’s Overview-

Super Zoom, Easy Sharing-Compact and comfortable to hold, the PowerShot SX510 HS camera creates images hard to match with a smartphone, with wireless sharing from virtually anywhere. Newly expanded built-in Wi-Fi® offers quick and easy setup, and lets you post to Facebook®, Twitter®, YouTube™ and Flickr®, send to email, plus share with your tablet, smartphone, networked PC and wireless PictBridge certified printer. With the ultra-powerful 30x Optical Zoom, you can capture an athlete’s facial expressions from up in the bleachers, achieving crisp clarity with Canon’s Optical Image Stabilizer. The 24mm Wide-Angle lens captures family groups and landscapes with ease. Experience low-light shooting like never before with the Canon HS SYSTEM: a 12.1 Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 4 Image Processor. And preserve memories you’ll want to relive in spectacular 1080p Full HD Video. Smart AUTO senses and chooses the perfect camera settings for 32 pre-defined scenes, making every shot (and video) a winner. Shooting is fun and spontaneous with High Speed AF, and Zoom Framing Assist makes it easy to keep subjects in sight at the long end of the zoom. The camera is equipped with Intelligent IS that diminishes blur caused by camera shake, and a big, bright 3.0-inch LCD screen makes it easy to shoot and review your stills and video.

I prefer the point and shoot cameras also. This Canon Powershot makes beautiful photos, I still haven’t figured out how to make clear night shots on mine, lol Looking forward to see lots of photos, you have a great camera 🙂

I’ve yet to meet a point and shoot that I like. I am in love with my Sony dSLR but nowadays, it’s so cumbersome to carry (along with a diaper bag, etc.). So, thanks for the info on the Canon. I’m interested in the wifi capabilities, too.

It’s impressive. The one thing I wish it had was a viewfinder. But given the image quality & features it was a good deal & very compact considering the 30x.

Canon sure does make excellent cameras. I have used both the Canon EOS Rebel (going on 20+ yrs) and also the PowerShot SD600 as my pocket camera (until it died on me…). When the pocket one died, I decided to try an Olympus for a change and I have been pleased with it.
