Things took a turn for the worse last night when pro-government supporters threw a grenade at a truck carrying anti-government protestors, killing one and injuring an estimated 30 people.
Tensions are running high as the BKK-shutdown enters its 5th day. The majority of the violence is taking place at night and tends to be concentrated in certain areas. Although a daytime attack has occurred also.
Although even with the violence occurring, Bangkok by day seems still to remain largely unaffected. Even though trucks carrying protestors blaring music and anti- government slogans are shouted throughout the city. As of now it is best to search various news sources for maps of incidents and avoid these parts. (Follow @RichardBarrow on Twitter for more updates) Stay away from the protests at night or all together. Do not buy into any of the t-shirt vendors selling “Bangkok Shut-Down” shirts. It is a rare time when you are better off to look the tourist role and not appear to be on any particular side.
It is difficult to wonder what may happen next. Both sides carry a lot of power in their respective ways. Although I am still enjoying exploring Bangkok the tension is hanging thick in the Bangkok haze and I am hoping this comes to a peaceful resolve.
