Street Food Prague – Trdlo

By

Walking the streets of Prague offers many street vendors peddling their wares from trinkets to sausages.  One of the things worth stopping and indulging in is Trdlo, a tasty cake, donut, pastry like concoction.

First made in Hungary, it soon spread to The Czech Republic and Slovakia.  The word Trdlo refers to the wooden spit that the dough is wrapped around.  The dough is kneaded out and wrapped around a Trdlo and cooked over hot embers usually from wood.   After which it is rolled in a generous supply of sugar and sometimes crushed walnuts as well.  It is served warm and goes well with a cup of coffee on a cool day.

For a cost of 50 Kc ($2.50)  it beats a donut any day of the week.

First off–this looks absolutely delish!!! What a great street food to stumble upon and warm you up as you walk through Prague! I know “America Runs on Dunkin” and Dunkin’s pastries are a big hit here in the states–but these pastries certainly look much better and more satisfying! A def. must-try if ever in Prague–maybe some day, I’ll be able to sample one for myself! One can only hope! 🙂 Thanks for sharing this great “foodie” insight!

I am a street food fan, and Prague offers some if the best. I have to admit I had more than my fair share.

I had something just like this in Romania though I can’t recall what they called it. In fact, I tried it for the first time while visiting Bran, where “Dracula’s Castle” is! Now I know how it is made – and called in the Czech Rep!

I read later that it traces its earliest origins to Transylvania. Called Kürtőskalács, but was home to the Székely Hungarians so I am unsure if it really is orginaly Romanian or Hungarian

Had one yesterday 🙂 Usually ask for hazelnut one. There are 3 more flavors: walnut, vanilla & cinnamon. Think the origin is Hungarian.
